When My Ship Comes In

One day daddy was in the navy in World War Two,
the next he was picking coal to buy our new shoes.
It will be alright when my ship comes in,
That's what daddy said to momma when he was at wits end,
Daddy and momma raised up five boys,
in a little town called Glendridge in Illinois.
Daddy use to mine for Peabody coal,
the mine took his lungs and almost blackened his soul.
Daddy died in nineteen seventy seven,
momma smiled at me and said he's gone to heaven.
Now he's on his ship waiting for momma and me
It's docked at the pearly gates in the celestial sea.
