The Well

Well digger, well digger, come dig my grave.

Make it as round as an infants nave.

Make it so deep I see no light,

for I want no ascension within my sight.

Make the walls smooth and the bottom firm,

to contain my body in a lightless urn.

Make it well marked for the passers by,

saying, “This is where my remains do lie.”

Put rocks and boulders around the rim.

Do this task and set me free.Give me no coffin, just toss me in.

Do this task digger and do it well.

Dig it deep so I’m warmed by Hell.

Make it muffle the life up above.

I want eternal rest, not peace nor love.

Tell not a soul to weep for me.
