Yesterdays

      Today I'm going to show my age,
but I hope that you'll enjoy this page.
When I was a child growing up in Glendridge Illinois,
a town of two hundred and so filled with Joy.
Most of our parents worked so hard each day,
then at night they went to Fritz's tavern to play.
Mom and dad called it going out Honky Tonkin',
they'd go have a few drinks and dance while the jukebox did spin.
They all kicked up their heels on Friday and Saturday.
After working all week for so little pay.
My father was a coal miner like so many others in town,
He was a world war two vet like so many others around.
He had so many wonderful friends too,
and they all believed in the Red White and Blue.
We had a small Mom & Pop's store in our town,
it had the best cuts of meat that could be found.
They had penny candy and gum and 10 cent pops,
Most of us went there it was our bus stop.
We'd get there in the morning and wait for the school bus,
sometimes in the store Irvin would yell if we made a fuss.
But Irvin and Millie did a lot for the town,
they'd give our parents credit when they had no money around.
I was always hooked on the penny gumball machine,
if you got a yellow speckled gumball you won a prize that was so keen.
Well now those days have long since went by,
but thinking of them puts a happy tear in my eye.
